Welfare Department
Welfare is done by appointment only. Please call 603-744-3220 to make an appointment.
Municipal welfare provides interim assistance with basic needs for those who do not have the resources to meet these needs. We provide interim, emergency assistance with basic needs for those unable to provide for themselves. Basic needs include: shelter, medications, food, rental assistance, and utilities (electric, heat, etc.). Assistance is issued in the form of vouches for these items paid directly to a vendor. We will also refer you to other programs that will help you to meet these basic needs.
Welfare applications are available in the Selectmen’s Office and online. Welfare is done by appointment only. You must bring all applicable information listed below to your appointment. Incomplete applications and/or insufficient documentation may delay assistance. Required documentation: application, proof of identification for all household members, proof of residency, proof of income and benefits for all household members for the past 30 days, proof of expenses, proof of all cash resources (checking/savings accounts), proof of any programs you have applied to, doctor’s statement is required if anyone in the household is unable to work, eviction paperwork(if applicable), completed landlord form and W9(completed by landlord if applicable).
Local welfare offices are funded primarily through property taxes. Every city and town in New Hampshire has someone appointed or elected to administer local welfare. If you need assistance, you would apply in the city or town where you reside unless you find yourself in an emergency situation in another community. You would then contact the local welfare office in that community.
If you require assistance completing the application and/or need to make an appointment to speak with the Welfare Director, please call (603) 744-3220.
